My Experience with Exogenous Ketones

What the heck is ketosis? I'm not going to get into the nitty gritty about all of the science behind this diet, but in a nutshell, it's when your body switches from using glucose (carbohydrates) as your primary energy source to using fat. When your body isn't receiving a constant influx of carbs, it has to find an alternate energy source so your fat cells become enlisted for the job.

After being diagnosed with Leaky Gut, I went on a ketogenic diet after reading about all the health benefits. Nutritional ketosis is difficult to maintain, but I managed to do it off and on for about 4 months, where I lost 16 pounds. And yes, everything they say about ketosis is true. Your hunger is greatly reduced so that you have total control over your food choices. Rather than scrounging for the potato chips to satisfy the immediate craving, I could think rationally through my hunger needs and take the time to slice up some carrots to dip in hummus. That constant battle between what I wanted to eat (cravings) and what I knew I should eat (healthy) was finally reconciled. Healthy won! 

The benefits greatly surpass just weight loss. Because let's get real. My biggest concern is multiple sclerosis and hashimoto thyroid disease. Some days they're like anchors dragging me down and keeping me from moving forward. Ketosis changed that for me. Energy. Energy. Energy. For starters.... Good sleep, no bloating, very little to no inflammatory pain in my joints, no brain fog, better capable of handling stress, no anxiety, happier.

So fast forward to today. I've completed my 5 days on exogenous ketones. First let me say why I started this supplement.
  • I felt that I had plateaued and needed a boost to keep up with a ketogenic lifestyle.
  • I'm extremely picky about everything I put into my body and read ingredient lists religiously. I researched everything in this supplement and couldn't anything wrong with any of it. Trust me, I almost wanted to find something bad so that I had an excuse not to try it. I even consulted with my brother, who is a clinical pharmacist for the U.S. Public Health Services.   • Zero bloating, no cravings or hunger beyond what I needed to eat for a healthy breakfast/lunch/dinner. TOTAL control over what I ate. No need for snacking at all.
  • No desire for sugar or carbs. Totally fine with my veggies, proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Energy! Anyone who has MS, thyroid, or any autoimmune issues, knows lack of energy ranks high on the complaints list. Energy is the best gift I can receive. As a result, I'm a better mother, wife, and employee. (FYI - I drink the non-caffeinated version)
  • It's important to drink a LOT of water on this. In fact, you know how they say when you're craving junk food, it's often because you are dehydrated and just need water? My body was able to tell the difference between thirst and hunger better than it had ever before. I loved that side effect because I was thoroughly hydrated. 
  • It tasted good and was ridiculously easy to implement into my daily life. One drink in the morning. Boom. Done. 
Overall Impression: I'm doing this. It's part of my daily routine. The results have been too good for me to stop at this point so I have to give it a shot to see what the longer-term results can be from it.
