The Secret to Losing Weight on Exogenous Ketones

I'm going to be straight-up honest with you.

My husband DID NOT lose 32 pounds by simply drinking exogenous ketones and calling it a day.

I wish I could say it's that simple. But let's be honest, we are all adults and know by now that no magic pills exist. We have to do our part. We have to do the work.

People complain that they are not losing weight on ketones because they are *hoping* the ketones do all the work for them, all the while eating their weekend donuts and happy hour Sonic drinks. And yes, ketones do amazing things on their own simply by merit of putting your body in a state of ketosis.

HOWEVER, if weight loss is your primary goal, there are some things you need to know!

Justin lost 32 pounds because he:
• Cut his carb intake to 100 grams or less per day. Some days were less than that.
• Cut out sugar and all soda. 
• Worked out 4-5 days a week. Not crazy crossfit, bootcamp-type workouts, but just a good, solid hour in the gym workout. Or run around the neighborhood. 
• Did intermittent fasting. 16-24 hours on occasion. 

Then you ask: "But if you eat low carb, cut out sugar and soda, and workout in the gym, aren't you going to lose weight WITHOUT ketones?". Well, yes, BUT you will be hating life on a low carb diet and no sugar because that is freaking hard to eat that way on a consistent basis. You are also very likely to fall off the wagon, get discouraged and give up, starting that "vicious cycle" over again. And what about those days you are just dragging and have no energy for exercise? 

That's where the MAGIC of ketones happen. You can eat low carb and no sugar all the live long day because being in ketosis helps take away cravings. It helps your brain make GOOD food choices. It keeps you feeling full. And let's not forget the energy boost! Ketones give you so much more energy so you WANT to get out and exercise, not HAVE to. Or just go for more walks with your family and run around the park with your kids. You have energy to be more active. You also sleep better, which transfers into (ta da!) -- ENERGY!

Ketones take the painful part of losing weight and make it seem like you're not having to work so hard anymore. So let's clarify that statement. Ketones do NOT take the work out of losing weight. But make it more enjoyable and less painful. You stay motivated and end the vicious cycle.

So there you have it. Let the poor, misunderstood ketones get their due justice. They are awesome when you use them as a TOOL, not as a CURE. 

And stop with the excuses. Exogenous ketones don't work for me because of this disease, or that ailment, or this age, or that something or other that makes me unique and different from everyone else. Putting your body in a state of ketosis benefits everyone because science works 100% of the time.
